Viareggio is one of the most famous seaside towns of Versilia, the northwestern coastal part of Tuscany that belongs to the province of Lucca.

The beaches in Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi

The resort town of  Viareggio offers more than 6 miles of soft, long sandy beaches, nearly four of which belong to private beach clubs; from simpler, family-owned businesses (where you can always find a cafè/restaurant, beach umbrellas, deck chairs  and sun beds) to super posh – the choice is yours. Naturally, prices vary. At a private beach club on the Promenade a daily pass inclusive of a beach umbrella, deck chairs, sun beds and the bathing hut is around eu30.00  and is suitable for a family up to 4 pers. Sport activities are also available – from windsurfing lessons to Beach Volleyball, Soccer, Beach Tennis, Table Football and tournaments of all kinds, to private pool, aqua gym, yoga.

Eat well in the beach clubs, too. Try the famous fritto misto di mare, for example.

Viareggio offers also more than 2 miles of free beaches. These are mostly located in the southern part of Viareggio, called by the local inhabitants “La Lecciona”, situated just before Torre del Lago (a district of Viareggio). This part of the beach remains natural. It is still possible to admire dunes of sand covered in the broom, next to the pinewood. This wild habitat belongs to the Regional Natural Park Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli.

Free beaches are generally very crowded during the weekend and no equipment is provided. “La Lecciona” is popular also for being one of the most famous gay-friendly beaches in Italy.

The Western and Eastern Pinewoods of Viareggio

Parts of the Regional Natural Park Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli are the two pinewoods that reach the sand and offer shade and oxygen to the village, too. They are very popular for families with young children and people looking for a refreshing green place to walk in. It is possible to rent bikes, and there’s a number of cafès and ice cream parlours. They’re a very popular jogging location, too.

Torre del Lago Puccini

The placid Lake Massaciuccoli is in Torre del Lago, a district of Viareggio that is famous worldwide for being the home town of the famous opera composer Giacomo Puccini. In his honour, every summer in Torre del Lago the Puccini Festival takes place.

The Carnival in Viareggio

Another worldwide event has been taking place in Viareggio every year for more than years: the Carnival of Viareggio. Every year in February floats of papier-mâché and masked crowds parade on the Promenade. In 2019 the masked parades will take place on the 9th, 17th, 23rd February and on the 3rd and 5th March 2019 along the extraordinary Liberty seaside boulevards.

La Passeggiata“: the Liberty Promenade of Viareggio

This unmissable sightseeing spot is a 2 km long pedestrian zone next to the beach, in which bars, restaurants and glamour fashion shops are situated one next to each other, often in amazing Liberty-style buildings like the Caffé Margherita, which date back to the first half of the 20th century.

Useful information

Viareggio has its train station of the same name, which is situated in the centre of town. It is fairly well connected by buses to the most central beaches. Car parking payment is required in most parts of the town‘s parking areas. Us ethe blue spaces and pay and display.

“La Darsena”: Yachts Shipyards and nightlife

Viareggio was once a fishermen’s village, and the sea has always been one of the greatest resources of the town. Even nowadays the sea is for Viareggio a powerful economic engine thanks to the exclusive shipyards that produce some of the best world’s yachts every year.

In this part of Viareggio, called “La Darsena”, which means “the dockyard”, there’s also the hub of the young nightlife. In front of the beaches of that part of the town, a number of nightclubs, pubs and restaurants with live music are open every weekend (and every night in summer) until late at night.
