Casa Berti is the perfect setting for learning something new whilst relaxing in the Italian countryside. With our dedicated studio space now up and running we can offer courses on painting, sculpture, yoga and cooking. You can even book courses specially for you and your friends.

Based in this beautiful rural setting you can enjoy utmost comfort. Swim in the peace of early morning sunshine; indulge in Italien lunches on the sun drenched terrace or escape from it all in the quiet corners of the villa.

Currently, we are running our ‘Sculpting in wax’ course on demand. You may sign up for a 5 day course, minimum 4 participants required. This includes full accommodation and catering in our luxury villa. There is disabled access to the upper floors.

We will concentrate on modelling directly in wax, using hot casting wax, warm modelling wax, cold carving wax, bronze rod and copper wire, to build one or several small pieces of sculpture suitable for casting directly into bronze by the lost wax process. The sculpture can be figurative or abstract, single or many. Dido will be on hand to help and advise if you already have an idea of something you would like to make, or to inspire – bearing in mind she herself is an animal sculptor – if you just don’t know where to start. Participants will be encouraged to sketch an idea, make a wire or bamboo armature if necessary, and make sculpture. Wax sculpture can be seen as an end in itself or part of a process of sketching out ideas in three dimensions, making maquettes for larger work, or as a method of producing a bronze. Here we will try to make waxes that are suitable for direct, one-off bronze casting rather than having an intermediary mould made for producing an edition of bronzes. At the end you may return your wax to the pot for re-cycling, take your wax sculpture home to keep as it is or get cast at a later date, or have it cast into bronze in Pietrasanta.

Or you can sign up for one of our regular week-long art retreats we are running in collaboration with Art Escape Italy.

Our painting workshops focus predominantly on oil painting – portrait, figure and plein air landscape painting. Our instructors are trained in academic painting techniques, and teach either sight-size or comparative measurement methods.

Retreat prices include tuition, accommodation, meals, model fees if applicable, and transfers. You can either purchase all the materials that you need for your workshop on arrival, or you can bring your own materials with you. See the materials list for each workshop.
